Rīgas satiksme has started work on the design of fast charging points

On 21 March, Rīgas satiksme and SIA RECK signed a contract for the design of fast charging points for electric buses to implement the project “Emission Reduction in the State City of Riga – Supply of Electric Buses and Development of Electric Charging Points”. The construction design will be developed over the next 10 months, followed by the construction by mid-2026, thus improving the charging system for electric buses.

Jānis Golubevs, Member of the Board of Rīgas satiksme: “The development of fast charging points will enable a significant recharge of the electric bus battery in about 15 minutes, thus expanding the number of routes operated by environment- and customer-friendly vehicles.”

To ensure an accurate design, the design work will be carried out in a Building Information Modelling system. The use of a Building Information Modelling system helps to save up to 30% on construction costs and helps to complete the works on time. Building Information Modelling (BIM) has also been used in the design of the tram route 7 extension.

The contract with SIA RECK for the development of the construction plans for the electric bus charging infrastructure was concluded on the basis of the results of the tender “Design and author supervision of the construction plan “Electric bus charging infrastructure, Riga”” and is priced at EUR 237 621.

The project “Emission Reduction in the State City of Riga – Supply of Electric Buses and Development of Electric Charging Points” foresees the establishment of 7 fast charging points and the charging infrastructure at the transport point at the intersection of Višķu and Latgales streets will be designed and constructed within the contract for the tram route extension and the construction of the transport point. The project will also include the purchase of 17 new electric buses to replace the outdated, around 20 years old, buses currently in use.

The works will be co-financed by the Recovery Fund of the European Union (EU). The total planned cost of the project is EUR 16.7 million, of which EU co-financing is EUR 14.3 million.

The aim of the project is to reduce emissions from public transport services in State City of Riga.

The project will improve the attractiveness of public transport and reduce its impact on the urban environment, as well as contribute to the gradual decarbonisation of public transport by promoting the transition from fossil fuels.
